Chapter Seven
Despite his promise to not seek out any of the other borrowed guards or assassins, Marrok couldn’t help himself. He knew this house too well, and most of the rooms in it, especially the areas that had been designed specifically to spars and training.
Werewolves were considered lower on the ladder than even half vampires, but that didn’t mean any full-blooded vampire noble was willing to spend an extra huge chunk of money to build a separate training room for them. The only ones who were ever separated were the nobles themselves and their staff.
There was the walled-off yard where most of the sparring took place, and the gym. All the equipment inside was secondhand, or even thirdhand, but the pool was always kept clean by the staff.
Everything looked exactly as Marrok had left it. The only difference was that there weren’t as many people practicing or exercising inside, and there definitely weren’t any other werewolves.
Marrok had to be here. Tristan couldn’t have known that ordering Marrok to not seek anyone out was only hindering the whole purpose of this. There weren’t exactly groups of guards and assassins stalking the halls that he could eavesdrop on, and so long as he made sure no one saw him, then he doubted, hoped, that Tristan wouldn’t hold this blatant disregard to his orders against him.
Much.
Besides. Marrok didn’t want these people, whose profession and training he shared, to see him wearing these ridiculous clothes. He silently prayed that Tristan wasn’t going to parade him around some noble party like this.
Everything appeared normal. The men socialized as much as they were allowed to, but otherwise they kept to their routines, ran, swam, and worked the weights.
Marrok didn’t hear anyone whispering any sinister plans to hurt Tristan. No one talking to anyone else about orders from their real masters to poison his lunch.
These were just hired hands.
It almost made him regret coming down here and wasting his time, but no. He’d learned something today. That these men were professionals, and so long as Marrok’s fears were put to rest, then he could consider this trip to be successful.
Marrok went around to the rest of the house to try to determine what else had been changed while he was away. The night had come, so the windows had been opened, and he was surprised to see a whole new building on the property that hadn’t been there before.
It was just a long, plain, rectangular house that was two stories with a flat roof and what looked like blue paint. There were lights in the windows, and Marrok was willing to bet that, along with electricity, there was also running water and heat.
He had to check that out. Lord Victor would never have allowed something like that to be built within sight of his house, much less on his perfectly kept lawn. Tristan must have put it there.
He’d expected some trouble when he tried to leave the house, and that servant girl did give him another one
